What Appreciation Feels Like

"...all that was going on and we never noticed. Take me back -- up the hill -- to my grave.

But first: Wait! One more look. Good-bye , Good-bye world. Good-bye, Grover's Corners....Mama and Papa. Good-bye to clocks ticking....and Mama's sunflowers. And food and coffee. And new ironed dresses and hot baths....and sleeping and waking up. Oh, earth, you are too wonderful for anybody to realize you. Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it -- every, every minute?"

~ From Emily's 'Farewell, Earth!' monologue in Goodbye, Grover's Corners Our Town

Emily's lament above is one of my favorite quotes of all time. It is so poignant and beautiful and such a great wake-up call. Don't let any of us ever be like Emily. Now you can't see you weren't warned!

TODAY

Walking outside, I am surrounded by dazzling color as the Fall splendor shows off for everyone. From brilliant red to pink, orange and yellow, the leaves of bushes and trees look as if they are glowing from within...and they are! They are infused with the light and love of the sun, and they are full of life, for a few more days...until they fall.

I am grateful to be able to stop and look at whatever calls to me, and to not worry at all about what anyone passing may think. Perhaps I can bring them a little smile also, as they stop to notice. I'm alive today and can walk with my beautiful strong body, see gorgeous things with my amazing eyes, and make connections with other spirits also walking on this earth. We all share in this grand adventure, and I'm so grateful I can feel it in every cell of my body. How exciting it is to realize that even though we seem separate, we are each the same essence of spirit, disguised in different 'outsides.' I have known this intellectually for many years, but have felt it lately, through and through. For this I am grateful also, as it seems nothing is more important than recognizing and cultivating this connection. I need it...you need it...our planet needs it.

FALL LEAVES

Inside again, I feel the warmth of home envelop me and I'm grateful. I run a hot bath and swirl my feet in the warm, fragrant water. How lucky I am to enjoy this solitude and peace. As I sit in the bath I feel the water bubble and gurgle around me, and I marvel at the fact that I'm waterproof. What a cool thing! My shampoo and conditioner and soap are all pretty colors and smell amazing, and I know I've helped a long line of people be prosperous - or at least pay their own bills - by buying, using and appreciating these items. How good it feels to be clean and fresh and to enjoy a sense of renewal.

As I get ready for bed, I reflect on all the things I have attracted into my life and all the things I still want to attract...are they really that different? Since everything already exists in the realm of time and space, then I am simply moving through it, touching some things and people and not others, and it's all OK.

Each moment and each experience is truly a gift, and I for one will not look back at the end of my life with regrets nor songs unsung...I will enjoy each experience and look at each moment with fresh eyes and appreciation, and with champagne and strawberries (chocolate-covered!) having been enjoyed to the fullest.

Remember to live in this moment, NOW, as from that moment your future moments are created. To end, another favorite quote:

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Champagne in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO, What a Ride!" ~ unknown
